Message from the Board

SRIYHA Parents,

The temporary ice plant at Boss has been installed and I am happy to report they started it this morning and have begun chilling the concrete for ice making to begin next week! This is of course very welcome news as I know these past 8 weeks of not playing on a regular basis has been extremely difficult. Practice schedules for November 6th through the end of the month have been populated to SportsEngine. We will upload December’s and beyond as soon as possible.

Home Games

The ripple effect from this closure will be a season long ordeal administratively. There are many home games listed as TBD on the SCHL schedule and there are more home games to be scheduled for U14 2nd half and ESGHL We are in a deficit for ice for games, so we are actively working to purchase and schedule games at West Warwick, St. George’s, and surrounding rinks to make up for that deficit. If your player’s team has a TBD on the schedule, please be patient as we work to get those scheduled.

Practices

Practices will be populated as soon as possible for individual teams as well as group-based skill sessions. This will allow player to practice multiple time a week even though Thanksgiving is usually when we lose ice at Boss. Boss has made concessions to us on ice sheets that we would normally not receive for other activities, however they understand what kind of predicament we are in being closed for 8 weeks.

Refunds

Next week you will receive an email detailing your player’s team refund schedule. The refunds will be delivered back the card on file for your player. If the card on file needs to be updated click here to update your account. Refunds will take a few days to process fully through the various institutions.

Photo Nights

SRI will once again welcome Flash Powder Photo to Boss for our photo nights. Travel photos will be conducted on Monday December 1st and Tuesday December 2nd. Travel players who miss those days can come by on Saturday December 6th at the house league session as a make up. Additional instructions and scheduling will be emailed in early November.

I will email again next week once we finally know the opening date for Boss. We continue to push for November 4th but that will hinge on the ice making process earlier in the week. I hope to deliver positive news soon on that front.

Sincerely,

Jordan Novak

SRIYHA President

The ice machine cometh......

The temporary ice plant got delivered to Boss on Monday the 16th and they are working to put it in place and fire it up!  We are that much closer to having ice and getting this season back to normal!

SCHL Selects Tryouts are coming - Nov 4/5 at Driscoll Arena!

SCHL Selects is a tournament team made up of the top talent in the SCHL.

With a team at each birth year, SCHL Selects provides the best players in the league with an opportunity to play a higher level of hockey at an affordable price, while continuing to play for their regular SCHL team.

We are excited to showcase the talent we have in the SCHL and help our players learn, grow, and play the game of hockey, all while proving that town teams can compete with AA teams across the region.

SCHEDULE: 3 tournaments over the course of the season (10-12 games) and 5-6 practices (once a month)

ELIGIBILITY: Any player from any division is eligible to tryout as long as they are rostered on an SCHL team

FORMAT:

First Tryout: the players will be ran through a series of skill drills. The players will then be divided into two teams and will scrimmage for the remainder of the session.

Call Backs: SCHL will release a list of players that have been invited to the Call Back tryout. This smaller pool of players will be split into two teams for a scrimmage.

How many players will make the team?

Each team will consist of 17 players - 9 forwards, 6 defenseman, 2 goalies.

Each team will also have 6 alternates - 3 forwards, 2 defenseman, 1 goalie.

2023-24 SCHL Island Travel

One major item of note this year is that travel to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket is MANDATORY for all teams in the SCHL (provided your division has an island team). We understand it is a long day, but the schedulers will ensure that if your player's team has an island team in the division the trip will be for two games minimum on that day. If a team fails to fulfill its obligation to travel to the islands, it will forfeit the games and forfeit participation in the playoffs. When the regular season schedules are released, please circle those dates and plan ahead. It is a great team building day and can be a ton of fun when everyone participates.

In The Crease

For this month, We would like to highlight a great goalie movement drill for younger goalies, The Post to Post Butterfly Slide.

The goalie clinics with Pro Crease will continue this year!  Drills and skills for goalies monthly!

  • September 11-12
  • October 10-11
  • November - no goalie clinic
  • December - no goalie clinic
  • January 8-9
  • January 29-30

If you know of anyone who wants to try some time in the crease, please reach out to me - they can try it at one of the SRI clinics and possibly play in one of our house league games to see if they like it.

House League Update

The SRI House League is tentatively scheduled to kick off the weekend of November 11th and 12th.  House league is a great place for younger skaters and goalies to get a bit more ice time and older skaters to help out, learn some coaching skills and get some service hours, if they need them.

House League Info - Contact Emily or fill out our House League Interest form.

4th Annual Golf Tournament

Save the date for another great event! Saturday, June 1st at Beaver River Gold Club - 1:30pm shotgun start! Registration and details coming soon!

Other Items

  • The SRI Goaltender Development program continues to rave reviews!  Coach Jason is now attending group practices to work with the goalies on a more individual basis.  As an organization, we are intent on providing all of SRI's goaltenders the goalie-specific training, drills and skills that they need to develop.  Keep it up Coach Jason!

  • Be a better hockey parent with the American Hockey Parent Handbook from USA Hockey.

  • The SRI Team Store will be open again in September - and you WILL be able to get one off jerseys!

Mini 1on1 - Tell your coach you want to be involved!

The upcoming season The Bruins are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Mini 1 on 1 and want to get as many youth players from around New England involved!

The winners of the Squirt and Girls U10 divisions will win a trip to the NHL All Star Game in Toronto. The Pee Wee and Girls U12 winners will win suite tickets to a Bruins game.

Competition:

  • All New England states will select two teams at the Squirt, Pee Wee, Girls U10 & Girls U12 age classifications to advance to TD Garden Finals scheduled for November or December 2023 (subject to change; more details will be sent closer to date).
  • New England states must host playdowns or choose other means to select teams no later than November 1st. Please email these details to youthhockey@bostonbruins.com
  • If states do not send teams info by November 1, 2023 all associations within state forfeit right to send teams to TD Garden finals

Tournament Outlook

There are many tournaments to choose from at the beginning of the season -

  • The Lake Placid International Youth Hockey Tournament will take place February 22nd - 25th, 2024.  This is always a kid AND parent favorite and will fill up quickly, so make sure your head coaches are aware of the signups, which happen VERY soon! Last year, the Rams took 4 titles home, all three U12 divisions and the U14 C division! The U12A team is a back to back champion at Lake Placid and will be looking the three-peat!!!

  • The Hockey Academy runs tournaments at Waterville Valley all season long.  They might not be the best (read: even) tournaments, but it's a great way to combine hockey with a family ski weekend!

Sponsorships

While we're discussing tournaments, sponsorships are a great way to offset some of the costs of playing travel hockey.  Sponsorship funds can be used for tournament registration fees, tournament hotel costs, and other travel related costs including team meals.  100% of the money collected goes back to the team that collected it.

Now is the time to begin asking your employer or other local businesses for their support.  We had several teams collect enough money last year to pay 100% of their tournament registration fees!

All sponsors receive recognition on our website and on social media.  This is a great way for local businesses to help our young hockey players and, in return, get some great exposure to all our hockey families.

Please see our Sponsorships page for additional information.

We highly recommend downloading the SportsEngine app as many of the coaches use the app for communication and several use it as the ONLY method of communication. The app can be downloaded here for Apple and Android.

Please remember to RSVP using the app to ALL of your games, scrimmages and practices so the coaching staff can adequately prepare!
